Tam Coc and Lan Ha Bay: Caves, Kayaking, and Hidden Landscapes with Teens
If you are looking for the absolute pinnacle of natural beauty in Vietnam, you will find it just south and east of Hanoi. While many travelers head straight to the famous Ha Long Bay, we discovered that pairing the inland rivers of Ninh Binh with the quieter waters of Lan Ha Bay gave us the perfect mix of active outdoor adventure and peaceful comfort.

We spent two nights exploring the emerald paddy fields of Tam Coc, followed by an overnight cruise. Honestly, while the cruise was beautiful, Tam Coc turned out to be my absolute favorite place of our entire two weeks in Vietnam.
Here is our honest guide to navigating these two spectacular regions with teenagers.
⚡ Quick Look: Our Top Accommodation Picks
To get the most out of these landscapes, you want rooms with a view and space to breathe after active days.
- Where We Stayed in Tam Coc: Tam Coc Wonderland Lodge – I cannot recommend this place highly enough. A quick word of caution: make sure you look for the Lodge, as there is a separate property called Tam Coc Wonderland Bungalow of the same name. It wasn’t hugely fancy, but we absolutely loved it. Our room featured massive, floor-to-ceiling glass windows on two sides, giving us clean air and gorgeous views over the jungle and mountains. The staff were super helpful, and they have a great pool.

- Our Lan Ha Bay Cruise: Peony Cruises – I spent a long time researching the perfect cruise line. I chose Peony, and we were incredibly pleased with our choice. 🚨 Crucial Safety Warning: Please make sure you use the official link or verify the exact name when booking. There is a very similarly named copycat website out there that is a known internet scam.

🚲 Two Days in Tam Coc: Paddles, Paddy Fields, and Peak Views
Ninh Binh is the wider region, but we chose to stay just outside the main town of Tam Coc, nestled right into the striking scenery of the limestone karsts. One of the best things about Tam Coc Wonderland Lodge is that they offer free hire bikes. On our first afternoon, we chilled by the pool and then took a quick, fun evening scoot across the well-lit paddy fields into town for a great local dinner.
The 500-Step Climb to Hang Mua Peak

The next morning, we set off on our bikes for a full day of exploring. While you can easily hire a private guide with a car or jump on the back of local motorbikes, I loved the freedom of cycling together to take in the scenery.
Our first stop was the Hang Mua Peak viewpoint. To reach the top, you have to tackle 500 steep stone steps. The walk itself isn’t technically difficult, but the intense July heat really saps your energy. Our advice? Take your time, enjoy the views, and utilize the shady corners. There is even a great spot to buy a cool drink on the climb. Reaching the top gives the boys a great sense of achievement, and the panoramic views of the river below are fantastic.

When you get back down, you are treated to another July highlight: the lotus flowers are in full bloom. You can wander right in among the lotus ponds, which are perfect spots for the boys to snap those iconic, Instagrammable travel photos.

Squeezing Through Caves at Trang An
From Hang Mua, we hopped back on our bikes and enjoyed a gorgeous cycle past emerald paddy fields and through traditional riverside villages to reach Trang An for a boat tour.

Trang An offers three different river routes through the limestone caves, so you can pick the one that appeals most to you. It is undeniably touristy—there are a lot of boats on the water—but the scenery is spectacular. Most tourists just sit back and let their local guide do all the rowing. Our family, however, got ridiculously competitive. We all grabbed oars, got stuck in helping paddle, and made it our mission to ensure we were faster than every other boat on the river! It probably made our tour a bit quicker and less tranquil than it was for others, but it worked perfectly for keeping the boys entertained. Along the way, the route stops at beautiful, historic pagodas hidden between the cliffs.

After a late lunch along the bike route, we headed back to the lodge for a well-deserved dip in the pool. To top off a perfect stay, that evening we watched an amazing lightning storm roll over the hills from the total comfort of our bedroom balcony while enjoying dinner at the hotel.
🚢 Over to Lan Ha Bay: Kayaking Misadventures & Sunrise Tai Chi
The next morning, a private minivan organized directly through our cruise company collected us from the lodge. The drive to the port takes about three hours, and the transit onto our cruise ship, Peony Cruises, was quick and seamless.

While many companies offer two-night itineraries, we decided on a single night on board, which was really enjoyable and felt like the perfect amount of time for us.
Lost at Sea (Almost!)
After boarding and enjoying a lovely welcome lunch, we geared up for an afternoon of kayaking and swimming among the limestone islands. The crew explicitly instructed us to kayak around the nearest island by turning right.
Unfortunately, we completely missed the first right turning! The crew told us the loop should take about 30 minutes. After 45 minutes of paddling into open water, we realized our mistake. The boys spent the rest of the time joking that we were going to accidentally paddle all the way to China! We had no choice but to turn around and complete a grueling paddle back to the ship. It was beautiful and brilliant fun, even if our navigational blunder meant we missed out on some of the scheduled swimming time.

A Magical Evening and Morning
The evening onboard was stunning. We enjoyed a gorgeous multi-course dinner and sat out on the deck sipping cocktails, completely soaking up the quiet solitude of the bay.

The next morning, my fiancé and I woke up early for a magical session of Tai Chi on the sun deck as the sun rose over the misty water. We decided to skip the main buffet breakfast afterwards, choosing instead to relax and enjoy the incredible island views from our private cabin balcony while the boys enjoyed a well-deserved lie-in. After a delicious brunch on board, we disembarked and met our transfer up to the capital city.

With our nature fix complete, it was time to dive headfirst into the historic streets, night markets, and famous railway alleys of Hanoi.
