Cape Town Beyond the Sunbed: Table Mountain, Peninsula Road Trips, and Surf Lessons with Teens

Cape Town is arguably one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and it is an absolute dream destination for a family road trip. It serves up a flawless mix of dramatic coastal scenery, high-energy outdoor activities, and incredible food.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Planning an African family adventure? This guide is part of our comprehensive, step-by-step master route: Comfortable Grit: Our Epic Southern Africa & Mauritius Loop with Teens. Head over to our main hub guide to see our full travel itinerary, route map, and essential mum-to-mum tips before you book!

We spent two nights based in the city centre during our Southern African adventure. By using a clever daylight driving strategy and a perfectly timed peninsula loop, we managed to pack a massive amount of action into our time without anyone feeling overwhelmed.

Here is our honest guide to exploring Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula with teenagers.

⚑ Quick Look: A Safe Arrival Strategy

As I mentioned in our main itinerary, safety and comfort are key when you are traveling with teenagers. I have a strict rule never to drive an unfamiliar car into a new African city after dark.

  • Night 1 (The Transit Base): Hotel Verde Cape Town Airport – We landed late in the afternoon close to sunset, so we took their free shuttle straight to this clean, eco-friendly hotel. The next morning, with a fresh head and broad daylight, we took the 5-minute shuttle back to collect our Avis hire car. Avis was easy and completely reliable.
  • Nights 2 & 3 (The City Base): Southern Sun Waterfront Cape Town – From the airport, we took the N2 motorway all the way straight into the city centre to this hotel. It is a fantastic, comfortable base that runs a free shuttle bus throughout the day and evening down to the V&A Waterfront (less than a 10-minute drive away).

⛰️ Day 1: Scaling Table Mountain

After checking into the Southern Sun Waterfront, we wasted no time. We headed straight to the cableway station to take the rotating cable car right up to the top of Table Mountain.

⛰️ A Mum’s Planning Tip:
“The ticket queue at the official lower cableway station can get absolutely massive, which is an unnecessary nightmare when traveling with restless teenagers. If you want to breeze past the ticket booth lines, you can pre-book a standalone Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Ticket on GetYourGuide. It secures your return ride on the rotating cable car and gives you a flexible 24-hour cancellation window if the infamous ‘tablecloth’ cloud rolls in and spoils the view!”

The views from the flat summit looking out over the city, the Atlantic Ocean, and Robben Island are completely jaw-dropping. It is the perfect introduction to Cape Town for the boys, giving them a real sense of scale for the landscape they are about to explore.

πŸš— Day 2: The Ultimate Cape Peninsula Road Trip Loop

Our second full day was dedicated to driving the spectacular Cape Peninsula loop. We absolutely loved this day. The scenery is wild, and the route offers a brilliant variety of activities.

1. Surfing at Muizenberg Beach

Our first stop was Muizenberg Beach, which is famous for its vibrant, colorful beach huts and excellent beginner waves. We booked the boys in for a surf lesson with Surf Emporium. They had a fantastic time challenging themselves in the powerful African waves, which is a brilliant way to burn off some teen energy early in the day.

2. Coastal Villages & The Penguin Trick

From Muizenberg, we continued along the False Bay coast past the iconic tidal pools of St James’ Beach and through the charming fishing village of Kalk Bay.

Next was Simon’s Town to see the famous African penguins at Boulders Beach. While you can pay to enter the main park and colony viewing decks, it can feel like a bit of a tourist trap. Instead, we walked along Willis Walkβ€”a free public boardwalk that runs right alongside the colony. We still saw loads of penguins right up close, but the experience felt much more relaxed and natural.
Insider Tip: If you have more time or are driving further east later, Stony Point in Betty’s Bay features a much larger penguin colony that is far less touristy and quite a lot cheaper, though it is further out from Cape Town.

3. The Wild Atlantic Side & Chapman’s Peak

After the penguins, we headed around the bottom of the peninsula. We chose to skip the actual Cape of Good Hope point as it adds quite a bit of driving time to the day, but it depends on what you fancy!

We turned up the western side of the peninsula, which faces the open Atlantic Ocean. I found this side even more stunningβ€”it is wild, wind-swept, and the massive, powerful waves are incredible to watch. We stopped at Scarborough Beach and then Long Beach in Kommetjie, where we walked along the spectacular sand, grabbed a coffee and a toastie from a local cafΓ©, and just sat back to watch the experienced local surfers tackle the breaks.

To head back towards the city, you drive over Chapman’s Peak Drive. It is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular marine drives in the world. Take your time, pull into the designated bays, and soak up the panoramic cliffside views.

4. 8,000 Seals at Hout Bay

Our final adventure stop was at the active fishing harbor of Hout Bay, where we boarded a boat excursion out to Duiker Island (better known as Seal Island). The island is home to a massive colony of roughly 8,000 Cape fur seals, and watching them splash, play, and bark around the boat is brilliant fun.

Accommodation/Dining Tip: If you want to base yourself right in this area, I highly recommend the Chapman’s Peak Hotel. I have stayed there previously and loved itβ€”their outdoor deck is fantastic for sitting out to enjoy a drink or a meal with views over the entire bay.

πŸ₯ Ostrich, Warthog, and African Drums at the Waterfront

We finished our epic driving loop by passing the popular beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay before heading back to our hotel to change for dinner.

We took the hotel shuttle down to the V&A Waterfront and ate at Karibu Restaurant. We all completely loved it, and the boys thought it was brilliant. We ordered a house special platter that included a huge beef steak surrounded by local game meatsβ€”think ostrich, kudu, and warthog sausages.

To top it off, the restaurant features live African drumming and traditional dancing right among the tables. Was it playing up to the tourists? Absolutely, but the energy was fantastic, the food was high quality, and it made for a wonderfully memorable celebration to end our time in the city.

With Cape Town ticked off, our Western Cape road trip continues east towards the whales of Hermanus and a luxury horseback safari.
