Johannesburg Beyond the Sunbed: Safe Airport Stopovers, Transit Tips, and City Links

Johannesburg—or Jo’burg, as it is affectionately known—is the main gateway for almost any big adventure into Southern Africa. Because it is a massive transit hub, flight timetables mean you will very often find yourself needing to spend a single night here before connecting to a safari or a beach holiday.

Head over to our main hub guide to see our full travel itinerary, route map, and essential mum-to-mum tips before you book!

To a newcomer, Jo’burg can sometimes feel a bit intimidating, and safety is always the number-one priority when you are traveling with teenagers. We had to book a one-night stopover here between our flights from Victoria Falls and Mauritius. I needed somewhere highly secure, close to the airport, and nice enough for us to genuinely enjoy our evening.

Having traveled through and stayed in Johannesburg many times, I have tested several different strategies. Here is my honest guide to navigating a Jo’burg stopover safely and smoothly with your family.

⚡ Quick Look: Our Top Airport Transit Hotels

If you only have one night in the city and your next flight is early the following day, you want to stay as close to OR Tambo International Airport as possible. Here are the tried-and-tested options I recommend:

Where We Stayed (Best Value): Sunrock Guesthouse – This place ticked every single box for us. The team was incredibly helpful in advance, providing detailed instructions on exactly where to find our driver at the airport arrivals terminal, which made the collection stress-free. It is a very short drive to the guesthouse, which has excellent gate security to enter the complex. Once inside, the environment is completely relaxing, featuring an outdoor pool and a small gym. They provide a buffet-style dinner with one or two choices (we had a chicken curry); while it certainly wasn’t the best food we had on our trip, it was perfectly fine, plentiful for the boys, and made our evening incredibly easy. The next morning, our transfer back to the terminal was just as smooth.

  • The Ultimate Convenience Picks (Walkable): If you want absolute simplicity and don’t want to get into a vehicle at all, look at the City Lodge Hotel OR Tambo International Airport or the more luxurious Intercontinental Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport. Both of these hotels are situated right at the airport and are completely walkable from the terminal building. The Intercontinental is beautiful and high-end, while the City Lodge is a solid, practical mid-tier option. The only downside is that you literally feel like you are sleeping inside the terminal, whereas Sunrock Guesthouse offers a bit of value and a nicer, more relaxed atmosphere.
  • The Shuttle Alternative: If Sunrock is fully booked, the Protea Hotel by Marriott O.R. Tambo Airport is another excellent choice that offers highly reliable and secure complimentary transfers to and from the airport terminals.

🚆 Staying Longer? The Rosebank & Gautrain Strategy

If your itinerary allows you to stay in Johannesburg for a few days to explore, my absolute golden rule is to stay close to one of the Gautrain stops.

The Gautrain is a modern, high-speed rail link that runs directly out of the airport terminal. It features a heavy, reassuring presence of security guards and is a brilliant, completely safe way for a family to navigate the city—even if you need to change train lines.

Why We Choose Rosebank

When using the train, I highly recommend heading to the Rosebank district. It is a fantastic, affluent neighborhood for families, and I always choose one of these three hotels:

  1. 54 on Bath – A stunning, luxury boutique hotel with gorgeous design.
  2. The Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank – A chic, very comfortable upscale option.
  3. Holiday Inn Johannesburg-Rosebank – A slightly cheaper, reliable, and comfortable mid-tier base.

The Location Benefit: When you step off the Gautrain at Rosebank, you only have a couple of minutes to walk through a vibrant, highly secure mall area to reach any of these hotel lobby entrances. In the evenings, you don’t need to worry about booking taxis or navigating dark streets; the mall area is littered with excellent restaurants you can safely walk to. There is a lot of security around the precinct. For an exceptional steak, book a table at The Grillhouse, or head to Doppio Zero or Tashas for a massive variety of fantastic dining options to satisfy hungry teenagers.

🚴‍♂️ Moving Beyond the Sunbed: What to Do in Jo’burg

If you are spending a couple of days in the city, there are two major excursions that are brilliant for teenage boys:

  • The Soweto Bicycle Tour: This was an absolute standout for my sons. We booked a guided bicycle tour of the famous Soweto township through Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers. Cycling through the streets lets you interact with locals, learn about the vibrant culture, and see the history firsthand in a high-energy, engaging way.
  • The Apartheid Museum: This is a profoundly moving and fascinating museum. It provides a heavy, stark look into South Africa’s history, and the exhibits are incredibly well-designed. It is an essential cultural stop that prompts some really mature, eye-opening conversations with older kids.

The Safari Connection

Johannesburg is also the perfect jumping-off point if you want to drive out to a game reserve. If you are looking for a personal recommendation, we have previously visited Bakubung Bush Lodge, located in the malaria-free Pilanesberg Game Reserve. It is a fantastic, comfortable lodge wrapped around a waterhole where you can see incredible wildlife right from the property.

With our safe city stopover complete, it was time for us to pack our bags and board our next flight out to the Indian Ocean for a week of total island bliss.
