Welcome to Beyond the Sunbed: Comfortable Long-Haul Adventures for Mums with Teens and Pre-Teens
Hello! I’m Kate, and I’m so glad you’re here.
If you are a parent of pre-teens or teenagers, you already know the holiday struggle. There comes a point where standard resort holidays—where the days are spent lazing on a beach or staring at phones by a pool—just don’t cut it anymore. Older kids get bored easily, and a bored, restless teen on holiday is hard work for everyone!
That is exactly why I started Beyond the Sunbed.
I am a mum to two sons. Like you, I want to give my children holidays that do more than just pass the time. I want to show them the broader world beyond our doorstep. I want them to experience different cultures, see massive landscapes, and break out of their comfort zones before they grow up and leave home.
But here is the catch: I don’t want to rough it in a muddy tent.
What is “Comfortable Exploration”?
There is a huge gap in the travel world. On one side, you have luxury all-inclusive resorts where you never see the real country. On the other side, you have rugged backpackers roughing it on public buses and sleeping in crowded hostels.
I believe there is a better way. I call it Comfortable Exploration.
On this blog, you won’t find advice on budget backpacking, but you also won’t find pristine luxury where you never leave the resort gates. Instead, my family focuses on:
- Active Days, Relaxing Evenings: We spend our days quad biking across the Sahara Desert, riding speedboats to jungle tunnels in Vietnam, or zip-lining across mountain canyons in South Africa—but our afternoons always end at a nice boutique hotel or safari lodge with a fantastic swimming pool.
- Nice Accommodations with Pools: A good pool is our absolute non-negotiable. It gives the kids a space to burn off steam and unwind, and it keeps the trip feeling like a proper holiday for them.
- Authentic Local Culture: We deliberately skip over-tourism where we can (like trading chaotic Marrakech for the historic streets of Fes) to show our children real, raw, and authentic life in developing nations.
- Decent Dining & Comfort: Traveling with growing kids means managing massive appetites. I seek out great local restaurants, vibrant food markets, and comfortable hotel buffets that can fuel our adventures safely and reliably.
A Mum’s Honest Perspective
Road-tripping and navigating through less-developed or unfamiliar countries as a woman traveling with kids comes with its own unique set of challenges.
I know what it feels like to navigate intense, motorbike-packed cities, to get caught in sudden desert sandstorms, and to be pulled over by local police checkpoints seven times in a single journey just because you stand out!
I write this blog to give you the honest, practical advice I wish I had before we set off. I will tell you exactly which hotels are worth your money, when you should splurge on a private guide, how to handle car hire credit card traps, and how to safely navigate long-haul destinations using nothing but your phone and a downloaded offline map.
Join the Adventure
You don’t have to wait until your children are fully grown up to show them the world, and you don’t have to sacrifice a hot shower and a comfortable bed to do it.
Whether you are planning your very first long-haul road trip or just looking for a way to keep your pre-teens and teenagers active and engaged on your next getaway, I hope our stories inspire you to pack your bags and move beyond the sunbed.

💡 A Note on How This Blog Works (And How You Can Help!)
Throughout this blog, you will see links to the exact hotels, transport companies, and tour providers we used and loved. These are affiliate links.
This means that if you click on one of these links and book your holiday, it costs you absolutely nothing extra, but the booking platform pays me a tiny commission. I see this as a way of paying it forward; the small amount of money earned goes directly towards funding our next family expeditions so I can continue creating these free, honest guides for mums like you to enjoy!
